Opportunity Information: Apply for BOR LC 18 N012
The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation announced a Notice of Intent to Award a discretionary cooperative agreement to the University of New Mexico under funding opportunity number BOR LC 18 N012 (CFDA 15.517). The opportunity was created on August 7, 2018, with an original closing date of August 21, 2018. It anticipates a single award with a maximum (ceiling) amount of $138,525, and eligibility is limited to public and state-controlled institutions of higher education.
The work is tied to the Gila River Basin Native Fishes Conservation Program, a long-running mitigation program created in response to the 1994, 2001, and 2008 biological opinions. Those opinions required actions to offset adverse effects associated with transferring Colorado River water into the Gila River Basin. The Program primarily targets conservation and recovery needs for several federally listed aquatic species, including spikedace, loach minnow, Gila chub, Gila topminnow, and razorback sucker, along with the Chiricahua leopard frog. Beyond those focal species, the Program also supports conservation measures that benefit other native aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife in the basin.
A central Program goal is to reduce extinction risk by replicating populations in additional suitable locations. By establishing or supporting multiple populations across different sites, managers can avoid losing distinct local lineages to events like drought, wildfire impacts, habitat disruption, or localized nonnative species invasions, while also expanding the overall distribution of imperiled species.
This specific project is aimed at improving management of two federally listed fish species, the spikedace and the loach minnow, by filling key information gaps about their population structure and genetic diversity across their range. The University of New Mexico would produce a basin-wide population genetics assessment for both species throughout the Gila River basin in Arizona and New Mexico. The assessment is to be based on variation at single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci, a genetic marker approach that can provide high-resolution insight into how populations are related, how much genetic diversity they retain, and whether there are distinct conservation units that should be managed separately.
In practical terms, the deliverable supports on-the-ground conservation decisions such as identifying appropriate source populations for translocations or repatriations, avoiding genetic mixing that could undermine locally adapted populations, prioritizing which populations are most unique or vulnerable, and evaluating whether existing or proposed replication sites are likely to maintain long-term genetic health. Because the Program is designed to mitigate impacts and strengthen recovery prospects, the genetic results from this project are intended to directly inform future stocking, habitat planning, and risk-reduction strategies for spikedace and loach minnow across the basin.Apply for BOR LC 18 N012
